CPS Energy’s Streetlight and Smart City project has been recognized with the prestigious 2025 Smart 20 Award, highlighting its commitment to innovation, sustainability, and smart city advancements. The Smart 20 Awards annually recognize global smart cities projects, honoring the most innovative and transformative work in the industry. The 2025 Smart 20 Award winners will be honored at the Smart Cities Connect Conference, from April 14-16, at the Henry B. González Convention Center in San Antonio.
Dalkia Energy Solutions has partnered with TerraGo Technologies to support a complete streetlight operations program for CPS Energy, the nation’s largest municipally-owned electric and natural gas utility, serving the greater San Antonio area. The program includes installation, operation and maintenance of street lighting infrastructure, as well as emerging smart city technology.
“For us, this is more than just a streetlight program—it’s about creating a safer, greener, and more connected San Antonio,” said Richard Medina Chief Energy Delivery Officer at CPS Energy. “By embracing smart technologies, we are enhancing public safety, improving energy efficiency, and paving the way for a more sustainable future.”
Dalkia Energy Solutions oversees the complete operation of over 135,000 streetlights within CPS Energy’s service territory. Dalkia selected TerraGo’s cloud-based software to streamline operations from its state-of-the-art Command Center facility, as well as evaluate emerging technologies in its new Innovation Lab, located in San Antonio.
“Our mission is about modernizing infrastructure with solutions that measurably improve the safety, energy efficiency and sustainability of the community,” said JC Florenson, Executive Vice President, Smart Infrastructure Solutions, Dalkia Energy Solutions. “Working closely with CPS Energy, we strive to pair the most effective technology with the vision of local residents — ensuring infrastructure is truly built and maintained to serve the entire community.”
One of the program’s early milestones includes the installation of solar-powered LED streetlights to address illumination gaps in key areas identified by recent studies. These energy-efficient, off-grid lighting solutions improve public safety by increasing visibility on roadways and in neighborhoods.
“At TerraGo, our software is designed to help cities and utilities make the leap from legacy assets and manual processes to smart infrastructure and automated workflows, but it doesn’t happen overnight,” said Dave Basil, President & CEO of TerraGo Technologies. “We’re grateful for the opportunity to work with Dalkia and CPS Energy on this visionary program that is making a difference today, and positioning the community and its citizens for a smarter, more efficient and connected future.”
The CPS Energy streetlight infrastructure and smart city program will be featured on a panel at the Smart Cities Connect Conference in San Antonio, on Tuesday, April 15 at 11:00 AM CST. City leaders attend free of charge. Learn more at: https://spring.smartcitiesconnect.org/
