LineVision, the global leader in Dynamic Line Ratings (DLR), and Pittsburgh-based electric utility Duquesne Light Company (DLC) today announced an expansion in the deployment of LineVision’s advanced non-contact overhead line-monitoring system across DLC’s footprint. This effort is part of a $19.7 million grant that the utility previously received from the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) to update and modernize the electric grid.
The expansion project marks the third deployment of LineVision’s DLR technology on DLC’s network since 2021. Previous deployments of the technology have shown as much as a 25% increase in transmission line capacity, which is unlocking more clean energy sources, enhancing grid flexibility to accept new sources of energy generation, and enabling a clean energy future for customers across the Pittsburgh region. The latest deployment will add LineVision’s DLR technology to an additional seven transmission lines. In addition, LineVision will enhance the reliability and resilience of DLC transmission lines by monitoring conductor health, analyzing the impact of extreme weather and high-temperature cycling events, and generating revised safe operating limits.
“LineVision is excited to expand our partnership with DLC,” said LineVision CEO Hudson Gilmer. “As a proven grid-enhancing technology that is already paying dividends for DLC customers, additional deployment of our Dynamic Line Rating technology will improve grid reliability and increase transmission line capacity to enable more clean energy access across western Pennsylvania.”
Under the DOE project, DLC will contribute $21 million in grid modernization projects over the next five years, including grid edge computing and other advanced technologies to increase decarbonization efforts and evolve the grid in ways that will protect the system from increasingly severe weather while maintaining affordable, reliable and safe service for customers.
“Expanding our use of LineVision’s DLR technology throughout our service territory is essential to strengthening our infrastructure and preparing our assets for the evolving energy landscape and impacts of extreme weather,” said Brian Guzek, vice president of corporate strategy at DLC. “This technology has already proved that it can bolster the reliability, capacity, affordability and clean energy deployment of our electric grid, and the additional federal funding will help us accelerate crucial investments in ensuring a clean energy future for our customers.”
LineVision’s DLR technology can be installed in days and integrated into utility control centers in months, rapidly increasing the capacity of existing transmission lines by as much as 40%. Further benefits include increased use of clean energy, reduced pollution, lower energy bills and increased transmission line capacity to help the Pittsburgh region meet growing electric demand, while achieving its climate goals and supporting Pennsylvania’s greenhouse gas emissions reduction target.
