LineVision, the world's leading provider of advanced line ratings, announced that the deployment of LineVision’s sensors on National Grid transmission lines in Western New York has been fully integrated into grid operations. This marks the largest operationalization of Dynamic Line Ratings (DLR) in the United States and the first in New York State.
“We’re proud to announce this milestone as National Grid uses the expanded transmission capacity to provide additional clean energy to New York homes and businesses,” said LineVision Co-Founder and CEO Hudson Gilmer. “LineVision’s technology is now playing an expanded and necessary role in accelerating the transition to a net-zero grid while increasing grid reliability.”
“Following a successful pilot, National Grid installed LineVision’s Dynamic Line Rating system on four transmission lines in our New York region. The system is now operational and providing automated, condition-specific line ratings to our transmission control room” said Brian Gemmell, Chief Operating Officer Electric Operations, National Grid New York, “Dynamic Line Ratings are a start to helping us make decisions on how to plan and operate the grid, further unlocking renewables and reducing transmission congestion for New Yorkers.”

LineVision's LineRate DLR software and sensor platform were deployed on four 115kV transmission lines in a renewable energy rich region of upstate New York in 2022. As expected, the increased capacity from LineVision’s DLR technology is highly correlated with renewable generation carried over these lines. Operationalizing this data will help National Grid maximize the capacity of these lines amidst changing weather conditions and bring more renewable energy to customers.
