Mainspring Energy announced today that it has won the prestigious IEEE Spectrum Emerging Technology of the Year Award for the company’s groundbreaking fuel-flexible power generator, the Mainspring Linear Generator. The award honors “The emerging technology having the greatest potential to achieve financial success in broad commercial application.”
The IEEE family of awards recognize exceptional achievements and outstanding contributions that have made a lasting impact on technology, society, and the engineering profession, from the radio, and electronic circuit to the machine learning device, microprocessor, and more. Prior winners of the IEEE Spectrum Emerging Technology award were Intel Corp. in 2023 for its Data Center GPU and NASA Jet Propulsion Lab in 2022 for its Mars Drone Helicopter.
In spring 2023 IEEE Spectrum published an article on the invention of the Mainspring technology written by co-founder and CTO Matt Svrcek. The article landed in SPECTRUM’s annual list of its 10 most popular articles, ranked by the amount of time people spent reading them.
“Mainspring is honored to receive this award from the IEEE and to be in the company of such an historic group of pioneers and technologies,” said Mainspring CEO Shannon Miller. “We are also incredibly proud of my co-founder Matt Svrcek, our CTO, for his outstanding SPECTRUM article and his immeasurable contributions to linear generator technology and to our company.”
The Mainspring Linear Generator delivers unprecedented fuel-flexibility – including the ability to directly run 100% hydrogen and ammonia as well as biogas and other fuels. It provides local, modular power generation that is dispatchable, low cost, and scalable to grid-level operations. The products have been in commercial operation powering Fortune 500 companies since 2020.
