Kontrolmatik Technologies, via its subsidiary Pomega Energy Storage Technologies, announced today that it will build its first U.S. lithium-ion battery factory in South Carolina. The 500,000 sq ft facility, which is expected to begin production by mid-2024, will be located in Colleton County, will create approximately 575 new jobs, and will have an initial production capacity of 3 gigawatt-hours. Pomega will produce lithium-iron phosphate cells that will be designed exclusively for grid-scale energy storage applications.
Pomega Energy Storage Technologies, founded as a subsidiary of Kontrolmatik Technologies in 2022, is a manufacturer and integrator of battery energy storage systems (BESS). In addition to manufacturing the battery cells at their factory in South Carolina, Pomega will also manufacture and assemble turnkey BESS, including the modules, cabinets, and other elements that are included in the final containerized solutions.
Pomega’s BESS can be collocated with renewable energy installations or can be designed as a standalone system. Energy storage systems are crucial to the push to achieve net zero emissions because of their ability to store renewable energy and push that power to the grid during periods of peak power consumption. They also help lower energy costs by increasing grid efficiency, provide more stable and higher quality power, and provide backup power during prolonged outages.
“We are very excited to locate our flagship factory in South Carolina, and we appreciate the warm welcome we have received everywhere we’ve gone throughout the state,” said Bahadir Yetki, CEO of Kontrolmatik and Pomega. “South Carolina was very clear in expressing their commitment to attracting top global technology and manufacturing companies to their state, and we are convinced that we will accomplish great things with the state’s support.”
When production begins at the company’s South Carolina factory, Pomega will be among the first and only U.S. manufacturers of lithium-ion batteries devoted exclusively to the domestic utility-scale energy storage market as opposed to the market for electric vehicles. This will place Pomega at the forefront of the energy storage revolution and allow them to not only vertically integrate their own supply chain for BESS, but also supply other domestic BESS integrators with these crucial lithium-ion batteries. Towards that end, the company has already begun signing offtake agreements for its future capacity.
