NRG Energy has started construction of a futuristic solar canopy at Patriot Place, a 1 million-square-foot retail and entertainment complex adjacent to Gillette Stadium in Foxborough, Mass.
As part of a 1 MW solar installation, the canopy will cover the outdoor walkways with a combination of standard and translucent solar panels generating renewable power.
Standard rooftop solar panels will provide additional power, bringing the expected annual output of the solar power system to 1.1 million KWh. The installation is expected to be completed by the beginning of the New England Patriots' 2012-2013 pro football season.
