An undersea turbine using tidal power to generate electricity performed successfully in initial tests off the coast of Scotland, a private energy company said.
The 100-foot-high, 1-megawatt turbine, lowered into position during winter storms off the Orkney Islands, is powering homes and businesses on the island of Eday, officials with Scottish Power Renewables said.
The company installed the machine, which has a blade circle 100 feet across, last year and began testing this spring.
