Dive Brief:
- A power outage delayed Game 3 of the Major League Baseball playoff series between the Boston Red Sox and the Detroit Tigers at Comerica Park in Detroit, Mich. on Tuesday. The outage occurred during the bottom of the second inning.
- The lights went out at 4:42 p.m. in the afternoon but umpires chose to stop play until power was restored due to overcast weather.
- Power was restored nearly at once but it took another 17 minutes for the stadium lights to fully warm back up.
- "This was just a random cable failure. It’s unfortunate that it occurred during a big ballgame, but it’s not a sign of any larger problem or in any way related to the city’s financial situation,” Steve Kurmas, president and COO of DTE Electric Co, told Bloomberg.
Dive Insight:
I think we all remember the rather unfortunate blackout at the Super Bowl last year (although, to be fair, it did inspire this brilliant Oreo ad into existence). While this particular outage didn't last nearly as long, even the most minor outages cause problems at sporting events due to the lag time between power restoration and stadium lights heating up. These types of incidents are a wake up call to everyday consumers who are unaware of the reliability issues facing today's power grid.
