The Tennessee Valley Authority says it accepts the verdict of its inspector general that construction of a new nuclear facility will run late and cost more because of poor management and oversight.
"We agree with the report's fundamental findings and recommendations," TVA said May 29 after its inspector general's office released a study critical of work at the Watts Bar Nuclear Plant Unit 2 near Spring City, Tenn.
On May 17, asked the Nuclear Regulatory Commission to extend the construction permit for Watts Bar Nuclear Plant Unit 2 to support a revised estimate of the time necessary to complete the project. The unit’s current construction permit expires in March 2013.
"Based on the OIG’s assessment, we determined that the poor performance experienced at WBN Unit 2 was attributable primarily to (1) deficiencies in project set-up and (2) ineffective management oversight," the Office of the Inspector General said in its report.
