Dive Brief:
- PJM Interconnection has issued a hot weather warning for the Mid-Atlantic region, instructing utilities to prepare for peak demand on Tuesday.
- The system operator said the hot weather will drive up the use of air conditioners, with an estimated 134,700 MW peak on Monday rising to 143,100 MW on Tuesday. This is projected to fall to 136,200 MW on Wednesday and continue to decline, PJM said.
- PJM asked suppliers to prepare to provide additional power to the grid should it be needed, but has not actually called for any more reserves. With 183,200 MW of installed capacity, PJM anticipates the grid should be able to handle the peak.
Dive Insight:

In Philadelphia, temperatures will rise to 92 degrees Fahrenheit on Tuesday and Wednesday before declining as the weekend approaches. People are likely to fire up their air conditioners to try to remain cool during the temperature spike, driving up electricity demand.
