Dive Brief:
- The Nuclear Regulatory Commission announced on Monday that it would be watching Duke Energy's H.B. Robinson nuclear plant more closely in South Carolina.
- The increased oversight will be accompanied by a follow-up inspection related to a diesel generator shutdown last October, which followed other incidents of fires, inadequate worker training and other problems.
- The NRC concluded in August that Duke failed to perform necessary maintenance at Robinson and is looking to curb similar troubles in the future.
Dive Insight:
The Robinson plant has crossed a line with the NRC, and although the agency now believe the facility is operating safely, it wants to Duke to "ensure that all important equipment is properly inspected and maintained,” NRC Region II Administrator Victor McCree said in an NRC press release. Corrective actions and improved safety performance could eventually lead to oversight levels reverting to normal standards, but Duke will have to deal with a few more watchful eyes for the time being.
