Dive Brief:
- Nest Labs has unveiled a new line of product offerings, but the focus is on home security and protection rather than energy and efficiency.
- The Google-owned thermostat can now keep watch on your home via a high definition camera, and includes a smoke and carbon monoxide detector being marketed with home insurance companies.
- While the new line of offerings is short on home energy advances, Greentech Media reports the company plans to unveil the next slate of features and partners for its Works with Nest program in the third quarter of this year. That program links the thermostat with various appliances, lights and even rooftop solar arrays on the home.
Dive Insight:
Nest Labs made its name in energy efficiency — the company's "smart" thermostat could learn your patterns and save you power. But the newest wave of offerings for the device less focused on energy savings and than they are on home protection. The energy products are coming, the company says, and ultimately the device is aimed at total home management and not just energy.
“At Nest, we always wanted to build more than a thermostat,” Nest CEO Tony Fadell said in a statement. "Our vision was to create a thoughtful home – a home that takes care of itself and the people in it."
Now including a carbon monoxide and smoke detector that can recognize different types of fires, alongside a high definition 1080p security camera, the sole, new energy offering of the "thermostat" appears to be a feature which can notify customers when temperatures drop to help avoid frozen pipes.
Greentech Media reports energy-focused announcements are expected in the third quarter, though there are no specifics. “We’re working on a whole lot of stuff on the energy front,” Greg Hu, Nest’s head of product marketing, told the news outlet.
Google bought Nest Labs last year for $3.2 billion. In April, it annouced a partnership with SolarCity to link its thermostats with rooftop solar arrays.
