Dive Brief:
- NRG Energy will install a largely renewable microgrid on Necker Island, a 74-acre resort in the Caribbean owned by Sir Richard Branson.
- NRG plans to use the renewable-oriented microgrid as a model for other islands.
- Two other billionaires – Larry Ellison and Peter Thiel – are installing microgrids on their islands as well.
Dive Insight:
When you have your own island, really, you should get a microgrid. Diesel engines, the main power source for islands, are loud and terribly smelly. Peak load on Branson's island occurs at 2 a.m.
While it might be all fun and games on Necker Island, microgrids are a big deal. New York just announced plans to spend $40 million to foster microgrids in the state.
