Dive Brief:
-
HiVE Energy Systems has developed an integrated energy storage system for commercial and residential use that is designed to be able to provide a full day’s worth of energy, according to Pacific Business News.
-
HiVE recently installed its first residential storage system, which can be powered by any energy source, on Maui.
- HiVE also installed its first commercial storage system on Maui, a 500 kWh battery that is being used in conjunction with a 140 kW solar photovoltaic array.
Dive Insight:
Hawaii has an ambitious goal of being power totally by renewable power sources by 2045. The state has also revised its net metering rules, creating two classes of solar power customers.
Customers on the "grid supply" tariff can sell excess power back to the utility, but at wholesale, not retail rates. "Self supply" customers do not get compensated for exported power and are expected to consume all generation on site.
The new offering from Maui-based HiVE’s Energy appears poised to tap into the state’s self supply market.
The commercial system the company just deployed aims to deliver energy free of natural fluctuations that occur due to sunshine variations, and also provide power once the sun goes down. And HiVE says its new residential storage system could allow a customer to eliminate their monthly utility bills.
“HiVE’s battery storage systems are the ideal solution for any off-grid or grid-tied residential application,” Abbas Akhil, HiVE’s chief technology officer, told Pacific Business News.
