Dive Brief:
- Conservative lawmakers want to move ahead with efforts to kill Kansas' renewable portfolio standard (RPS).
- The Kansas legislative session is halfway over and the bills to end the RPS failed to pass either the House or the Senate, a move that is usually required for bills to be acted on in the second half of the session. But conservative lawmakers say they expect to debate the bills soon.
- The effort to end the RPS, which climbs to 20% by 2020, is backed by the American Legislative Exchange Council (ALEC), a conservative organization. A similar effort in Kansas failed last year.
Dive Insight:
Last year, ALEC-supported bills to roll back renewable requirements in 13 states failed to pass. So far, although you never know with the legislative process, the group doesn't appear to be doing any better in Kansas this year.
