Georgia Power on Wednesday announced that it has rolled out additions to its online Storm Center site, updating its interactive outage map features. The new map will update every 10 minutes, on the utility's mobile-optimized site, allowing customers to contribute outage reports and track changes as crews conduct repairs in the state.
"While Georgia Power is a leader in the industry in reliable, affordable energy service, outages do still occur and it's our goal to restore service to all customers as soon as we can," Leslie Sibert, vice president of distribution for Georgia Power, said in a statement. "The new Outage Map makes information about outages readily available to our customers and empowers them to make informed, timely decisions for their business or family."
The site also offers users the options of viewing regional and travel-related reports, along with tips for dealing with storm situations before, during and after severe weather occurs.
There are a lot of great features on this menu, but the one utilities should particularly take note of is the optimization for mobile. As customers find themselves at the mercy of severe weather and power outages, smartphones are often their last link to the Internet and online updates.
