Dive Insight:
Global car production hits about 100 million cars per year, with EVs making up a very small portion of that. But with 100 million cars produced each year and billions of vehicles in use worldwide, "the market is enormous," Musk said.
"Our true competition is not the small trickle of non-Tesla electric cars being produced, but rather the enormous flood of gasoline cars pouring out of the world’s factories every day," Musk said. Tesla Motors was "created to accelerate the advent of sustainable transport," even at the expense of exclusive rights to its own technology.
