Dive Brief:
- Comcast and NRG Energy have teamed up to sell power in Duquesne Light’s service territory in the Pittsburgh area.
- Under the pilot offering, Comcast customers who sign up with Xfinity’s Energy Rewards can get some HBO shows as an incentive. They can also get a free smart thermostat by signing up for Xfinity Home, Comcast’s home automation and security service.
Dive Insight:
The pilot in Pennsylvania is likely the first step in a growing partnership between Comcast and NRG. Comcast had 53.1 million Internet, voice and video customers at the end of 2013. It's not clear how many customers Comcast has in Pennsylvania (or Texas or other deregulated markets), but that's a massive customer base to try to sell electricity to, as Utility Dive noted last month when we looked at why Comcast was getting into the electric retail business.
