Dive Insight:
CPS Energy President and CEO Doyle Beneby isn't saying where he is heading, but confirmed he is stepping down from his leadership at the San Antonio muni.
"Although many of you might have already heard, I’m sharing with you what I consider to be bittersweet news," he said in a blog post on the company's web site. "I’ve recently notified our Board of Trustees of my intention to resign from my position as President and CEO, effective September 30, 2015."
Beneby gave no indication of his next post, however, saying that news would be forthcoming in the near future. "Going forward, within a few weeks, I’ll be able to share what my next career adventure will be," he said, hinting only that "I also hope to stay connected in some way, to the San Antonio Community for many years to come."
KSAT-12 TV, which broke the news of Beneby's departure, reports the position will be somewhere in the renewable energy field. City manager Sheryl Sculley called the news "an immense loss for CPS Energy and San Antonio ... Doyle has done an outstanding job during his CEO tenure."
According to the CPS website, under Beneby's tenure the San Antonio muni has offered the lowest rates among the top-10 largest U.S. cities, "while ranking number one in wind-energy capacity among municipally owned energy systems and number one in Texas for solar generation."
