The Quechan Indian tribe, which occupies the Fort Yuma reservation in California, says a proposed wind-powered generation facility would disturb sacred lands, and they have obtained a temporary restraining order against work on it.
Pattern Energy Group LP got U.S. Department of Interior approval for the Ocotillo Wind Energy Project on May 11. It would have 112 turbines on 122 acres of a 12,000-acre tract.
The Quechan say sacred cremation sites have been found on the project site. President Keeney Escalanti told Fox 5 San Diego, "There is just so much out there in that particular area they just haven't had time to proceed through the proper process," Escalanti said.
