Subsidiaries of AES Corp. and Panasonic have signed an agreement to build a 10-MW energy storage facility at Jhajjar, in Haryana State, that will be India’s first utility-scale storage project.

The facility will provide reliability and back-up services to Panasonic’s Technopark manufacturing plant in Jhajjar.

Panasonic will provide the lithium-ion batteries for the facility while the system will run on AES Energy Storage’s Advancion 4 platform.

India plans to add 20 GW of solar power in the next few years and 100 GW by 2022. All that solar power, as well as about 30 GW of wind power the country plans to install in the coming years, is expected to require about 20 GW of energy storage installations by 2020.
Those estimates represent meteoric growth in a country that is just embarking on its first large-scale storage facility, being built by a joint venture of Panasonic India Pvt. Ltd. and AES India Pvt. Ltd.
AES operates 116 MW of energy storage projects around the world, but the project with Panasonic represents AES’ entry into the commercial and industrial energy storage market.
The facility will back up a Panasonic manufacturing facility, while demonstrating grid stability and renewable integration services in the region.
“Panasonic India’s partnership with AES signifies the convergence of synergies to deliver reliable, cost-competitive solutions to meet growing energy demand,” Manish Sharma, executive officer of Panasonic and president and CEO of Panasonic India said in a statement.
AES says its Advancion platform can be used for both utility-scale and behind-the-meter applications and allows for standard configurations from 100 KW to over 1,000 MW, and from 15-minutes of duration to over four hours without any reengineering.
AES unveiled its Advancion technology in November at an installation at Warrior Run in Maryland.
