(November 29, 2016) -- New York’s Reforming the Energy Vision (NY’s REV) has been named the winner of the 2016 Dive Award: Disruptive Idea of the Year by Utility Dive, a leading industry news publisher.
When NY’s REV first launched in 2014, it was met with some apprehension from those questioning just how to reimagine the traditional utility sector business model. But as the plan develops into implementation, the power sector is softening to the idea of bringing more clean energy resources online.
"While New York's Reforming the Energy Vision didn't launch in 2016, this is the year we saw the idea spread beyond borders as other states launched similar proceedings. The breadth of influence from this initiative earned it the Disruptive Idea of the Year." said Krysti Shallenberger, associate editor of Utility Dive.
“When we launched REV in 2013 in the wake of Superstorm Sandy, we were acting upon Governor Cuomo's directive to recreate an electric industry in New York that was prepared for major climatic events and could meet consumer demands for cost-effective, resilient, reliable, secure, and environmentally-sustainable electric power,” said Audrey Zibelman, CEO of the New York State Department of Public Service. “For New York State, delaying the activities necessary to achieve a decarbonized electric industry simply was not – and is not – an option.
“The outcomes we wanted are already materializing: greater capital and operating efficiencies, enhanced consumer value, along with smarter, cleaner and more-resilient networks. Through regulatory and programmatic reforms, New York utilities are now transforming themselves into platform businesses that embrace, rather than resist, technological innovation and partnering at the edge of their networks. There are also programmatic reforms, which are leveraging public dollars better for scale and deployment and have led to the Clean Energy Fund, the NY Prize program, the New York Green Bank and many other REV initiatives. It is both gratifying and exciting to see other States and governments launching similar initiatives.”
The 2016 Dive Awards recognize the industry’s top disruptors and innovators. From Executive of the Year to Obsession of the Year, Utility Dive solicited suggestions for title nominees from its 100,000 readers.
With the help of a panel of industry insiders, winners were chosen by the editors of Utility Dive based on resonance and industry impact.
