Dive Brief:
- Global solar capacity installations will exceed wind this year for the first time, according to a report from Bloomberg New Energy Finance.
- Photovoltaic plants will add 36.7 gigawatts around the world in 2013 while wind capacity will reach 35.5 gigawatts, about 25% less than in 2012. Solar installs will be 20% higher than last year, the Bloomberg unit found.
- The pace of wind installations, which were more than double solar before 2011, is being stymied by market and policy uncertainty in Europe, the U.S. and China, the report said.
Dive Insight:
In addition to "dramatic cost reductions" in the cost for photovoltaics, Japan and China are offering strong incentives for solar, offsetting a slowdown in the European solar market.
